The digital transformation of Polish SMEs – growing interest, but still full of contrasts

We are proud to share the latest report from Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK) – "Digitalisation in the SME sector. What will accelerate the transformation?". The Digital Poland Foundation was honoured to play an active role in this project!

The digital transformation of Polish SMEs – growing interest, but still full of contrasts

We recommend the latest report on the state of digitalisation among small and medium-sized enterprises in Poland, produced by Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego. The Foundation actively participated in and supported this important project, which assesses the state of our domestic businesses.

The report features our expert commentary (Piotr Ciski from the Council and Piotr Mieczkowski from the Foundation’s Management Board), and during Tuesday’s launch of the report, our Managing Director Piotr Mieczkowski chaired a painfully candid opening panel discussion entitled ‘A boost for digital transformation: how to remove barriers and support SMEs’.

The data in the report paints a very interesting, bittersweet picture of Polish business. On the one hand, there is huge progress and willingness, as 64% of SMEs prioritise digitalisation in their strategy, yet as many as 85.1% declare they will maintain or increase their spending on technology. Around 24% of companies see digital solutions as a real opportunity to build a competitive advantage. The good news is that the proportion of digitally excluded companies has fallen to just 4.9%, with an optimistic forecast of a further drop to 2.2% within a year!

On the other hand, there are challenges we must speak openly about. As many as 92% of SMEs do not measure the impact of their digitalisation efforts. We invest, but rarely check the hard ROI. Worse still, leaders’ budgets amount to a mere approx. PLN 15,000 per month (PLN 180,000 per year). Given current implementation costs and IT specialist rates, Polish companies face a huge challenge in scaling their investments.

Piotr Mieczkowski discussed how to remove these barriers with a panel of experts from the Ministry of Development and Technology, BGK, the Polish Development Fund S.A., the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development and Symfonia.

The report itself also features valuable comments from representatives of, amongst others, the Ministry of Digital Affairs, the Industrial Development Agency S.A., Think Tank The Company, the Cashless Poland Foundation and Mastercard.

We would particularly like to congratulate Maciej Kliś, Ksawery Stojak and Marek Grygier on a superb and insightful report. Well done, as this is yet another edition of this important publication. We also remember the excellent report by Marianna Sidoroff and Paulina Kiewicz, which served as the basis for launching a much-needed awareness campaign to highlight the benefits of digitalisation for businesses. We are delighted that the foundation and our funders, such as Symfonia, are partners in this campaign and that we are actively participating in presentations and webinars.
